Dr. Sun Yat Sen Museum Review

Sun Yat Sen (12 November 1866 – 12 March 1925)was a Chinese doctor, revolutionary and political leader. As the foremost pioneer of Nationalist China, Sun is frequently referred to as the "Father of the Nation" (國父), a view agreed upon by both the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China. Sun played an instrumental role in the overthrow of the Qing dynasty during the Xinhai Revolution. Sun was the first provisional president when the Republic of China was founded in 1912 and later co-founded the Kuomintang (KMT) where he served as its first leader.

Dr. Sun was a uniting figure in post-Imperial China, and remains unique among 20th century Chinese politicians for being widely revered amongst the people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Although Dr. Sun is considered one of the greatest leaders of modern China, his political life was one of constant struggle and frequent exile. After the success of the revolution, he quickly fell out of power in the newly founded Republic of China, and led successive revolutionary governments as a challenge to the warlords who controlled much of the nation. Sun Yat Sen did not live to see his party consolidate its power over the country during the Northern Expedition.

His party, which formed a fragile alliance with the Communists, split into two factions after his death. Sun's chief legacy resides in his developing a political philosophy known as the Three Principles of the People: nationalism, democracy, and the people's livelihood.

My after-thoughts after a trip to Dr. Sun's Museum

We had the priviledge of going to the Museum in on Nov 13, 2011, 1 day after Dr. Sun's birthday. As 2011 marked the 100th year of Dr Sun's reforms (1911), many events were upheld to celebrate the reborn of the nation.

After the trip, I have a lot of respect for Dr. Sun. What really widens my eyes was the motive which drove Dr Sun to reform China one hundred years ago. To me, the trip was a religious lesson rather than a tourist tour.

In the exhibition guidebook the following was quoted:

"When Dr. Sun established the XingZhong Hui in 2894 in Honolulu, the initiation ceremony for members included the taking of an oath. A new member would place their left hand on open Bible, raise their right hand, ask God to witness the alliance and swear that the "member from such county and such province, named such, pledges to drive out the crooked Manchu rulers, revive China and create a people-centred government."

What you think and desire really will manifest in life when you do have the intense desire for it. Living is indeed easy, but leading a meaningful life for God and others is yet a lifelong lesson to strive for.

Do I suggest you to go to this tourist attraction? Yes, I do highly recommend you to go there. Afterall, it only costs $10, but if you can go on Dr. Sun's birth (Nov 12) or death (March 12), it will be awesome to save yourself $10 of the admission fee :)
