Scheme 6000 - What would you do if you have $6,000 extra?

Under “Scheme 6000”, a sum of HK$6,000 will be given to each holder of a valid Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card (HKPIC) aged 18 or above, so as to leave wealth with the people.

The eligibility date for “Scheme 6000” is 31 March 2012. Anyone who is aged 18 or above and holds a valid HKPIC on that date meets the eligibility criteria of the Scheme.

Depending on their individual circumstances, eligible persons may register for the Scheme through banks or the Hongkong Post from 28 August 2011 to 31 December 2012. Registrants confirmed to have met the eligibility criteria will receive payment.

My thoughts on this scheme 6000

Discussed with a buddy of mine just yesterday on various government policies, and we talked about this "scheme 6000" thingy. Both of us agreed that it was not a wise move to use our tax dollars.

Effectively, the working class (who pay the tax dollars) is giving away our hard-earned cash to EVERYONE above 18, including those who are not living in Hong Kong at the moment. Just an example, my mom and 2 brothers who are entitied to this scheme are not working in Hong Kong and in no way they are serving the Hong Kong economy, why should they be included in the scheme? (Sorry, mom and bros, no offence.)

Then, what would you imagine a teenager (18-19 year-old) living in Hong Kong do with the $6,000? Not much, except buying a ipad or a portable PC device and an apps or two (or jail-breaking it to download all the apps for free.)

And to the working class like myself, what would I do with it? I have yet to figure out. Perhaps, I would donate some or all of it to those who are really in need. Or, I may treat my friends for a dinner or two, or something to that effect. That's it. In all, it's not of much use.

My buddy, during the discussion, actually thought it would be more helpful if the government use that money to build a park or for other recreation service Hong Kong, it would be more beneficial for all.

I asked many of my friends and relatives opinion of the scheme. We more or less think the same - i.e. the scheme 6000 is not very useful for the society as a whole.
