Would you be willing to sell your eyesight for less than USD40,000? I guess not. From the SCMP:
At least four mainlanders sold their eyesight to a Hong Kong insurance fraud syndicate accused of making bogus claims of almost $18 million
The mainlanders were paid between HK$200,000 and HK$300,000 to have their eyes surgically damaged, and their injuries were used to make claims on insurance policies obtained with false documents
Insurance company spokesman said, these cases were isolated. However, they are difficult to detect and counterfeit.
Here is the insider-scoop:
Every month, about 20,000 Hong Kong insurance agents, desperate to fulfill insurance quota, are pressed to produce insurance policies so as to maintain their employment contracts. If they fail, insurance companies will slash their employment benefits. To meet the ends, some insurance agents throw away their hearts and create unethnical insurance schemes.
Insurance agents are amateurs, when compared to insurance fraud syndicates, that are focused to crack the system.
Who are losers?
Insurance buyers, with all the right motives, trying to protect their family members get burned by those who don't play by the rules.
No doubt, many poor mainlanders are willing to give an arm and a leg to feed their family members. To me, injuries-providers are not evil, but just plain naive, given their low level of education and their stress to meet ends for their families. Many hungry souls would go for such deals. The only question left to negotiate is how much.
