February 7, 2006 00:42 - Hong Kong Fortune Telling

The most profitable business is, perhaps, by
telling other people what their lives will be like.

It's risk-free and low cost. The only
requirement you need is a sweet-mouth and some imagination to make up a good
story.

Let's guess what this fortune-teller is talking
about, shall we?

What about something like:

"Over, over, my Goddess, when will my next
customer drop by, sit on the stool, have me spell out his/ her future, and
finally pay me his/her hard-earned money, in return? I have been sitting here
for hours. The question is, how long do I have to wait? and what's my future
like?"

Two years ago, a good friend of mine invited me
to visit his fortune-telling teacher, whom I had seen on TV, who did a talk show
on TVB about "Fung Shui".

It turned out to be a hilarious event.

[...]

Fung Shui Master said "According to the
features of your face, your parents must have loved you very much."

I thought to myself, although they may not use
the right method to deliver that message, 99.9% of parents love their children
"very much".

"Hmm... you have good "karma" with books",
according to the shape of your ears. This statement is after the fact that he
got to know what I did for a living.

My Gosh! How insightful could that be. It does
not take a rocket-scientist to figure that out a lawyer* needs to study a lot in
order to become one.

I treated the visit a talk-show as well as an
opportunity to get to know why my friend (who has a Stanford Master degree) had
been following this "Fung Shui Master" for more than 2 years, and counting.

I am sure many busy-bodies feed their lives
just by telling "stories". The irony? There is a huge demand for it.

Don't get me wrong. Fung Shui, to me, is a
subject of metaphysics, which base on science. Not everyone is good in
metaphysics, just like any other subject on Earth.

My conclusion?

No matter how educated one is, s/he is willing
to pay a good price to have someone to look into the future, out of good
intention.

I just don't understand why so many
intelligent brains would dump money into these obvious scams. I believe our
future is in our hands today.

Let's work on it.

Note:

* A metaphor only and I am not a lawyer.

Term to learn:

Blow Water - A Canton slang which
translates as bull-shitting.

Illustration: someone starts chit-chatting with
you before s/he finishes swallowing a mouthful of water. The result? Blow-water,
that is.
