August 24, 2005 09:21 - Hong Kong invention - Wireless Battery Charger Plate

From SCMP:

Travelling without carrying chargers for every mobile phone, digital camera, MP3 player or palm pilot you own is finally possible.

Ron Hui Shu-yuen, a professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering at City University, has developed the first wireless battery charging plate.

The charger uses near-field electromagnetic coupling, allowing different devices to be charged simultaneously when placed on a charging plate that is plugged into a normal power outlet. Charging time is similar to that of normal chargers...

The platform is expected to sell for between $200 and $300.

This is definitely a great news. I have got more than 10 unused battery chargers, the remains of my previous electronic "toys" including 3-4 PalmPilots, several mobile phones, and my previous Nikon digital camera. I simply don't know what the best way to dispose these chargers.

It would be a great idea if hotels maintain charger plates at every room, then travellers don' t have to worry if they have forgotten to bring their own.

However, with this little invention, I think I will not experience battery lockout. $200-$300 will be a good investment, if it also serves my laptop.

Thank you, Dr. Hui. Your little invention is really unreal. Keep it up!
